Stellenbosch FC draw against Uthongathi FC

Stellenbosch FC took on KZN visitors Uthongathi FC at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday, 26 August 2017.

The boys from the Winelands started the game strongly and had the ball in the back of the net in the 4th min.  Capetonian Rafiq de Goede, son of former Hellenic and Cape Town Spurs stalwart, scoring from close range to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later Ryan Chapman almost doubled the lead but an excellent save at the far post by the Uthongathi denied the striker.

Both teams enjoyed ball possession for periods during the first half but neither could turn this into clear goal scoring chances.  The teams went into the break at 1-0.

The second half continued as the first half ended, with play restricted to the middle of the park.

The experienced Vuyisile Ntombayithethi was brought in to replace Ryan Chapman in the 58th minute.

The 60th minute brought some controversy, when Stellenbosch captain Ayanda Nkili was adjudged to have pulled an opponent in the penalty area.  The referee awarded a penalty with Xolani Slawula making no mistakes from the spot to draw the away team level.

Steve Barker introduced Broderick Burds in place of Lucky Sithole.  Burds immediately got involved with play and brought some much needed energy into the game.  He whipped in numerous crosses from the left but his teammates failed to get on the end of it.

In a final push for a win, Jamie Webber came on for Elias Monene  in the 84th minute.

The game ended 1-1.

Stellenbosch FC will travel to KZN for their next match against Royal Eagles on Sunday, 10 September 2017.

Stellenbosch FC win season opener

Stellenbosch FC started their 2017/18 Season with 3 points when they beat Ubuntu Cape Town FC.

The boys from Stellenbosch started the game on the front foot and looked in control for the first stanza of the game.  They however had to wait until the 23rd minute to get on the score sheet.  Newly-signed Abednigo Mosiatlhaga delivered a pinpoint cross from the right to Elias Monene, another new aquistion, who calmly headed home to give the team from Winelands the lead.

Stellenbosch could have added to this goal before halftime, but decision making in the final third let them down.

Ubuntu Cape Town  came out for the second half a total different team and took the attack to Stellenbosch.

The newly-formed side were rewarded for some enterprising play when they equalized with a header in the 56th minute.

In response, Stellenbosch head coach, Steve Barker, brought on 17 year old Amajimbo’s player  Luke Le Roux for goal-scorer Elias Monene.  The youngster looked a bit nervous starting off but grew in stature as the game progressed.  Broderick Burds also came in for Vuyisile Ntombayithethi which gave Stellenbosch more width on the left wing.

The changes resurged the team as Stellenbosch FC pressed forward, creating a few half chances as they looked to score.

The final substitute was Terry Uiseb replacing Ryan Chapman up front.  This turned out to be a master stroke as a free-kick swung in by Burds was brilliantly headed home by Uiseb in the 92nd minute to give Stellenbosch FC a hard-fought 2-1 victory over their Cape Town opponents.

The win took Stellenbosch FC to the top of the log standings after the first round of matches.
